Herbie and his companion Kimie arrived at our sanctuary in September of
1998 after an emergency rescue from Lebanon, Oregon. We found the
two chimpanzees living as pets in a small shack made with chicken wire,
and brought them to their new home at Chimps, Inc. To see
pictures of the former home click here. Today, Herbie has plenty
of space to swagger around proudly, displaying his impressive 200
pounds of muscles.
Born on March 26, 1986, into a human
family, Herbie still enjoys thumbing through magazines, watching
television and carrying around his favorite basketball. His
previous life as a pet has also developed his obsession with hats and
shoes. When Herbie accepts you as a friend, he will rip off the
bill of a baseball cap and pass it to you through the cage.
Herbie's
favorite food is oatmeal and a glass of milk, lots of milk as he signs
"drink", "drink", "drink". He also know several other signs such
as, "food", "hungry", "please". "more", and "good boy". Herbie
brings lots of energy, comedy and joy to the sanctuary. He enjoys
all the space, enrichment and love we give him too.
