Topo was the first chimpanzee to make his home at Chimps Inc. After about twenty years of adjusting to numerous residences, dwelling in small windowless cages in roadside zoos, and working in the entertainment industry, Topo came to us from New York State with hopes of beginning a new peaceful life on October 10, 1995.

Although we were unable to obtain his official date of birth, we estimate that he was born in the early- to mid- 1970's. Despite his somewhat mysterious past, we celebrate his birthday every year on November 16th.

We suspect that Topo had not experienced the outdoors before he joined us, but he now enjoys a pleasant chase around the enclosure and a good laugh when he sees his human friends. Even though Topo did not socialize with other chimpanzees prior to his arrival, his natural instincts have prevailed. As new members arrive at our sanctuary, his friendly demeanor immediately gains the admiration of both chimpanzees and humans. For more than a decade, our community has respected him as the alpha male, and in return Topo continues to watch over his family to ensure their safety.
