Chow Time

Chow Time!

Four weeks into the internship program here at Chimps Inc., caregivers may grant an intern the opportunity of giving chow to the chimps. I was fortunate enough to start feeding chow this week, and it has drastically changed my relationships with the animals. Now that I am a source of food, I have suddenly become a lot more interesting to each individual. Generally, the chimps wouldn’t let me get so close to them without something delicious in my hands (especially Patti and Thiele), so chow provides me with the unique opportunity to spend some quality one-on-one time with each chimp. Emma is my absolute favourite to feed thus far. When she sees me approach with the tray of chow, Emma drops her lower lip in excitement and comes down to see me. She can be a little spacey at times, and requires constant encouragement to take food. When she does manage to grab something tasty, she makes the cutest grunts, expressing her excitement over the food she’s just received. I can’t help but smile when I hear her make these sounds, as I picture a little kid saying “Yummy! Yummy!”
