Patti was born on September 11, 1982 at Marine World Africa USA in Vallejo, California.  She was raised by humans and trained to perform tricks in front of crowds of people.  Due to Patti’s exceptional personality, she was forced to perform for fourteen years, unlike most entertainment chimpanzees whose “careers” end between the ages of six and eight. Although Marine World collected public donations to fund a retirement home for their animal performers, the facility was never built and all of the older chimps were sold or sent to other facilities.  In June of 1996 Chimps Inc. opened its doors to Patti.  She became the sanctuary’s second rescue and is our second oldest resident.

Patti is the matriarch of the group, settling disputes and reassuring the others in times of excitement or stress.  She is exceptionally smart and flourishes when given enrichment that requires tool use. For the more challenging tasks Patti is always patient and determined to get those last grapes or peanuts after everyone else has given up.  She is also quite adept at communicating what she wants from the caregivers through her excellent use of body gestures and American Sign Language.  Patti is very close with her sister Thiele, and the two are never far apart. She also has a strong bond with Topo and can often be seen grooming him, surrounded by a nest of perfectly crafted blankets.

Although chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, they should never be raised as humans, kept as pets, or used for public entertainment or biomedical research.  While cute and cuddly when they are small, they quickly grow up to be unpredictable and dangerous.  Chimpanzees are wild animals and deserve to be treated as such.  Support legislation to stop the exotic pet trade and entertainment industry!  Chimpanzees share 98.76% of our DNA and deserve 100% of our commitment and respect.

Most of the residents at Chimps Inc. arrived here after years of living in substandard conditions in the entertainment industry or private sector.  Each of their stories are different and many are heartbreaking, but there is a common thread in every case: an emotional being that deserves a second chance at life in a permanent, loving sanctuary.  By symbolically adopting a resident, you are helping to provide spacious indoor and outdoor enclosures, connections to “family” groups, stimulating enrichment, and fresh, natural foods in a peaceful environment.

For a donation of $10/month, you will receive a beautiful adoption package complete with an informative biography, personalized adoption certificate, glossy photograph, an animal fact sheet, and a subscription to our quarterly newsletter. You will also receive biannual updates on your adoptee.
