Swing or Slide: Sizing a Wrought Iron Driveway Gate in Pearland

The choice between a wrought iron gate that swings and one that slides is usually made on appearance, and it should be made on geometry. Almost every driveway has one configuration that works comfortably and one that has to be forced, and which is which is determined by the slope of the drive, the space beside the opening, the setback from the road and the width of the opening itself. Getting this decision right at the start avoids the two most common outcomes: a gate that cannot open fully, and a gate that opens into traffic.
The questions that decide it, in order
How much level ground is there beside the opening? A slide gate needs clear, level run off space along the fence line, roughly the width of the opening plus a little. If the opening is fourteen feet, you need about fifteen feet of clear space beside it with nothing in the way: no trees, no utility boxes, no landscaping, no slope. If that space does not exist, a single slide gate is out, and the choice is a bi parting slide, which needs half the space on each side, or a swing.
Does the driveway slope? This is the question that eliminates slide gates most often. A slide gate travels horizontally along a track or a cantilever rail, and it cannot follow a grade. On a drive that rises from the road, a slide gate will either drag at one end or leave a large gap at the other. Swing gates can be built to follow a modest grade, and they can be hung with rising hinges that lift the leaf as it opens to clear a rising surface.
How far back from the road is the gate? A swing gate that opens inward needs the swing radius clear inside. A swing gate that opens outward needs it clear outside, and outward swing across a public sidewalk or into a roadway is usually prohibited and always a bad idea. If the gate sits close to the street with a rising drive, the practical answer is frequently a slide.
How wide is the opening? Beyond about sixteen feet, a single swing leaf becomes a problem. The weight at the far end of a long lever puts enormous load on the hinge post, and wind load rises with area. Wide openings are usually a pair of leaves, or a slide.
Swing gates, and what they demand
The single leaf swing is the most common residential driveway gate and the most straightforward, provided the opening is modest. Two leaves meeting in the middle handle wider openings with half the leverage on each post, and they look right on a formal entrance.
The critical component is the hinge post, and it is where most failures originate. A post carrying a heavy leaf is being pulled over constantly, and it is being pulled in one direction, permanently. In Gulf Coast clay soils that move seasonally, a post set too shallow or in too small a footing will lean within a couple of years. When it leans, the gate drops at the latch end, and it begins to drag.
Proper practice is a substantial steel post, set deep in a concrete footing sized for the load and the soil, below the depth at which the clay moves with moisture. This is not the place to save money, because correcting a leaning hinge post afterward means digging out the footing and starting again with the gate off.
The other swing gate limitation is the arc. A leaf sweeping open occupies a quarter circle of space, and it must be kept clear permanently. Not clear today, clear always. A car parked inside the gate, a bin, a delivery, or a bed of shrubs that grows a foot is enough to stop a gate opening, and an automated gate that is stopped by an obstruction stops mid travel.
Slide gates, and their two forms
Rolling gates run on wheels on a track fixed to the driveway surface. Simple, strong, cheap, and capable of very heavy leaves. The drawback is the track, which sits in the driveway, collects debris, ices up rarely but seizes with mud and leaves regularly, and has to be kept clear. In an area with heavy rainfall and washed sediment, the track needs sweeping more often than people expect.
Cantilever gates carry the leaf on rollers mounted to posts beside the opening, with a counterbalance section extending back along the fence. Nothing crosses the driveway. There is no track to clean, nothing to seize, and nothing to catch in a flood. The costs are that the gate has to be roughly one and a half times the opening width in total length, so it needs even more run off space, and that the posts and rollers carry the entire load and must be engineered accordingly.
Where the driveway floods, and there are plenty of places locally where it does, cantilever is the more sensible choice by a wide margin.
The material question sits underneath both
Whichever way the gate moves, the leaf itself is a welded steel frame carrying infill. Wrought iron in the modern trade means ornamental steel, and the two things that decide how long it lasts are the frame section and the finish.
The frame should be square or rectangular tube, sized for the span rather than the appearance, with welded corners rather than mechanical joints. On a long leaf, an internal diagonal brace running from the bottom hinge corner to the top latch corner is what stops the gate racking into a parallelogram over time. A gate without that brace will sag, and once it has sagged it cannot be pulled back square without cutting into it.
The finish is the whole corrosion defense. Bare steel in this climate begins rusting immediately, and the humidity means it never gets a dry season to recover in. Hot dip galvanizing before coating is the standard that lasts, and powder coat over galvanizing is the combination that survives twenty years rather than five. Where a gate is welded on site, every weld must be cleaned and coated by hand, because the heat destroys the coating locally and those spots are always where the rust starts.
Sizing the opening
Fourteen feet is a comfortable single vehicle opening. Twelve feet works but leaves little margin for a trailer or a truck with mirrors, and a driver approaching at an angle needs more room than one approaching straight on. Sixteen feet is generous and is worth it where the approach is tight or turns immediately.
Consider what has to get in. Moving trucks, delivery vehicles, a boat trailer, emergency services. A gate that a fire truck cannot pass is a serious problem, and many jurisdictions have minimum widths and access requirements for exactly this reason. Check before building.
Height is a separate decision and it is mostly aesthetic below about six feet. Above that, wind load rises and the gate becomes a sail, which drives up hardware requirements.
Pedestrian access
Almost every driveway gate installation should include a separate pedestrian gate, and a large number do not. Without one, every person on foot either operates the vehicle gate or climbs it, and the vehicle gate is not designed for pedestrian traffic. The wear from opening a heavy powered gate so somebody can walk through is real, and so is the safety issue of people walking through a moving vehicle gate.
A three foot pedestrian gate beside the drive costs very little relative to the main gate and removes the problem permanently.
Making the decision
Level ground beside the opening, no slope, and a wide opening points to a slide, and to a cantilever slide where flooding or debris are likely.
A rising drive, limited run off space, and a moderate opening points to a swing, inward, with a properly engineered hinge post.
A wide opening on a rising drive with no side space points to a double leaf swing.
And in every case, decide before the ironwork is designed, because the leaf construction, the post sizes and the footings all follow from this one choice and none of them can be changed afterward without starting over.
